Every one of us has been in a situation where we came out feeling hurt, rejected, confused and bewildered when our manager got visibly angered and upset simply for making an innocent suggestion we thought would be of help.... ONLY to find out LATER that the manager was in fact quietly, slowly, personally sinking under the increasing weight of a growing backlog while DROWNING in a rising flood of issues escalating globally overwhelmingly and the resolution for which he was to be held responsible yet increasingly feeling totally unsupported by his team.
Yet we choose to insist on looking at our own feeling of hurt and dented significance rather than to ask - what is the REAL opportunity contained within this.
The opportunity for the significance we craved delivered here in an unexpected wrapping was as clear as day... had we taken our eyes off ourselves and put them on the plight of our flailing manager for just one fleeting second. Not only would we have had our significance but also a lavish dose of profusely showered gratitude. A wonderful opportunity.. YET MISSED because we had NOT trained ourselves in the untapped skill of 'receiving'
The blanket rule therefore on receiving is turn nothing back. Examine closely and in minute detail every opportunity that comes our way.
